A field guide is a practical reference designed to help someone recognize what matters, find their way around, and get started without reading a textbook first.
That is exactly how we use the term at the Atlanta chapter. The Atlanta GRC Engineering Field Guide is our membership guide and starting point for people entering the community.
It is designed for members at every level, but especially for someone who has just joined and is asking a few basic questions: What is GRC Engineering? What does this chapter actually do? Where should I start learning? And what does everyone mean when they say things like PULL UP or Jump Squad?
Built to be useful on day one
The Field Guide gives new members enough context to participate without making them feel like they need to learn everything first.
Inside, members can find:
- a plain-language introduction to GRC Engineering and how engineering approaches can change GRC work
- practical starting points for learning, building, and experimenting
- an introduction to the Atlanta chapter, its values, and how members can contribute
- learning paths and resources for continuing beyond the basics
- a Chapter Slang guide for the local language and quirks that make the Atlanta community its own
The guide makes room for people coming from different backgrounds. Audit, cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, risk, cloud, development, and adjacent disciplines all have something to bring to GRC Engineering.
It also introduces some of the Atlanta chapter's own language and values. Assure the A is more than a site name. It is a reminder that better assurance is something we build together through stronger practices, useful technology, shared knowledge, and a community willing to experiment.
Start where you are
You do not need to read the Field Guide from beginning to end before joining an event or contributing to the chapter. Use it as a reference. Follow the sections that match what you are trying to learn, explore the slang when you hear something unfamiliar, and come back as your interests grow.
Explore the Atlanta GRC Engineering Field Guide.
The guide will continue to evolve alongside the community. As members build projects, learn new tools, and develop better ways to approach GRC work, we want the Field Guide to make those lessons easier for the next person to pick up.
Make the first step clearer, then keep building from there.
